No Grocery Shopping for a Month -- Time to Clear Out, Clean Up, Eat What We Have

No grocery shopping for us for the entire month! It's time to clean out the fridge, the freezer, and the pantry. We're going to eat what we have. There may be creative meals by the end of the month! We've decided that we'll buy milk, but that's it.

We tend to collect food. There's a Manager's Special at the grocery store and spaghetti sauce is less than half price. Bob likes to fish and is good at it. The week after Halloween, candy is 75% off. Haven't tried cactus petals and they are in the clearance bin -- lets get a jar. Garbanzo beans are good for us; they are on sale; let's get a few cans. All of these started out as frugal foods. But not so much anymore, if we aren't eating them.

I routinely date and inventory groceries before I put them away. As we use food items, we scratch them off the inventory list. So, I have a good idea of what we have. We won't be going hungry. But we will be cleaning out the refrigerator and freezer. We'll be eating up the surplus of older canned goods. And, yes, I expect to find a surprise or two by the time I get to the back of the shelf.

No grocery shopping for a month is going to be a challenge for us. We grocery shop for entertainment, getting a cheap thrill from getting a great deal. We're going to have to pass up great deals. And, although very thrifty, I know that if I want a specific food item I can buy it -- at least I could up until we started this challenge. There's also the issue of fresh fruit and veggies, and we thought of making exceptions for these. But, if we make more exceptions we won't accomplish the goal of clearing out, cleaning up, eating the foods we already have on hand. We're going to need to stay out of the grocery store!

So, here we go.

The No Grocery Shopping Challenge Is On!

See what we're eating and how this month of no food shopping is progressing.
